Inspection Procedure 1: Windshield wipers do not work at all.

caution Whenever the ECU is replaced, ensure that the input and output signal circuits are normal.

COMMENTS ON TROUBLE SYMPTOM

The windshield wiper motor, the column switch (column-ECU) or ETACS-ECU may be defective.Check the wiper backup circuit (between the B-201 column switch connector terminal No. 8 and the B-317 ETACS-ECU connector terminal No. 64), and repair if necessary.

PROBABLE CAUSES

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE

STEP 1. M.U.T.-III diagnosis code.

Check if an ETACS-related diagnosis code is set.

Q. Is the diagnosis code set?

Diagnose the ETACS-ECU. (Refer to GROUP 54A - ETACS, Trouble Symptom Chart .)
Go to step 2.

STEP 2. M.U.T.-III data list

Check the input signal related to the windshield wiper operation.

  • Set the electric motor switch to the ACC position.
Item No.
Item name
Normal conditions
Item 29
IG SW (ACC)/Electric motor switch (ACC)
ON
OK: Normal condition is displayed.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to step 3.
GROUP 54A - ETACS, Inspection Procedure 1 "The electric motor switch (ACC) signal is not received."? Refer to .

STEP 3. Connector check: A-02 windshield wiper motor connector

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to step 4.
Repair the damaged connector.

STEP 4. Check the windshield wiper motor.

Check that the windshield wiper motor works normally.Refer to .

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to step 5.
Replace the windshield wiper motor.

STEP 5. Measure the resistance at A-02 windshield wiper motor connector.

(1)Disconnect the connector, and measure the resistance at the wiring harness.
(2)Measure the resistance between the A-02 windshield wiper motor connector terminal No. 6 and the body earth.
OK: Continuity exists (2 Ω or less)

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to step 7.
Go to Step 6.

STEP 6. Check the wiring harness between A-02 windshield wiper motor connector terminal No. 6 and the body earth.

note Before the wiring harness check, check the B-124 earth connector (front LH), and repair if necessary.

  • Check the earth wires for open circuit.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Intermittent malfunction. Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points, - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions .)
Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 7. Connector check: B-304 ETACS-ECU connector

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to step 8.
Repair the damaged connector.

STEP 8. Measure the voltage at B-304 ETACS-ECU connector.

(1)Disconnect the connector, and measure the voltage at the wiring harness side.
(2)Measure the voltage between the B-304 ETACS-ECU connector terminal No. 20 and the body earth.
OK: Battery voltage

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to step 10.
Go to step 9.

STEP 9. Check the wiring harness between B-304 ETACS-ECU connector terminal No. 20 and the fusible link (25).

  • Check the power supply line for open circuit.
note Before the wiring harness check, check the B-308 junction block connector, and repair if necessary.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Intermittent malfunction. Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points, - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions .)
Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 10. Check the wiring harness between B-304 ETACS-ECU connector terminal No. 8, 7 and A-02 windshield wiper motor connector terminal No. 1, 2.

note Before the wiring harness check, check the B-306 junction block connector, and repair if necessary.

  • Check the input and output lines for open or short circuit.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to step 11.
Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 11. Check the trouble symptom.

Check that the windshield wipers work normally.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Intermittent malfunction. Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points, - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions .)
Replace the ETACS-ECU.
